The ultimate purpose of a covenant relationship is not accountability, but nurture. As a spiritual friend your responsibility is not to make others “toe the line,” but to enable them to become all God has called them to be. Spiritual friends are committed to protecting each other through mutual accountability, to be sure. Yet, if that becomes the sole reason or even the primary reason for the friendship, it will not long survive. The bread that nourishes the soul is acceptance and encouragement, not accountability.

“Accept one another, then, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to God.”

— Romans 15:7 (NIV)

Lord Jesus, I thank You for the godly individuals who have laid down their lives to help me become the person You have called me to be. You know who they are. Bless them I pray. Amen.
