In March 1990, Dr. Robertson McQuilkin resigned as president of Columbia Bible College to care for his wife who was suffering from the advanced stages of Alzheimer’s disease. As a husband, I am deeply moved by Dr. McQuilkin’s selfless decision. Yet, I think it would be a mistake to assume that his decision was an isolated choice. In truth, a decision of that magnitude is almost always the culmination of a lifelong series of smaller, daily decisions. And, as such, it challenges every one of us to examine the choices we make each day and the way we relate to our spouse.
“Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her.”
— Ephesians 5:25 (NIV)
Lord, teach me to live selflessly day by day so that I will be prepared to lay down my life for my wife should that day ever come. Amen.
