Someone has called 2 Corinthians 5:21 the great exchange. Jesus takes our sins and gives us His righteousness. By virtue of His divine nature Jesus was inherently righteousness. As a man He fully obeyed the Law of Moses and thus was completely righteous in God’s sight. By virtue of His sinless life, He earned His righteousness. When we trust Jesus for our salvation, He imputes His righteousness to us (both His inherent righteousness and His earned righteousness) and now God sees us as completely righteous; the same way He sees Jesus.

“God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.”

— 2 Corinthians 5:21 (NIV)

Jesus thank you for taking our sins in exchange for Your righteousness. Amen.
