Franklin Pierce is the only president of the United States to refuse to place his hand on the Bible while taking the oath of office. Why? Because he no longer believed in the goodness of God. The Pierce’s first child lived only three days. Their second son succumbed to typhus at the age of four. Then on January 6, 1853, just two months before his inauguration, the Pierces were in a train wreck that took the life of their third and only surviving child. The death of a single child is enough to try the faith of the most God-fearing parent, but to lose three children, as the Pierces did, would tempt almost anyone to blame God.
“Are you still trying to be godly when God has done all this to you? Curse him and die.”
— Job 2:9 (TLB)
Lord, help us to trust you even when life seems to make no sense. Amen.
