Because God is holy, He cannot tolerate sin. Being just, He cannot allow a single sin to go unpunished. And because He is wholly righteous, He cannot fellowship with anyone who does not measure up to His holy standard. Yet, because He is also a God of love, He cannot turn His back on fallen humanity. And because He is a God of mercy and grace, He cannot allow a single sinner to be eternally lost without providing a way of escape. Herein lies the dilemma – how can God be both just and merciful? How can He forgive our sins without betraying His justice? Yet, if He does not forgive our sins, will He not betray His love and mercy?

“Who is wise enough to understand this? Who has been instructed by the Lord and can explain it?”

— Jeremiah 9:12 (NIV)

Lord, help us to experience You even if we can’t fully comprehend You. Amen.
