Although the scriptures allow for divorce in the case of adultery (see Matthew 19:9) that should never be the first option. If the adulterer has confessed, broken off all contact with the other person, and sought your forgiveness it is your responsibility to forgive him/her as Christ has forgive you (Ephesians 4:32). Even if your spouse is truly repentant forgiving him/her will not be easy but the Lord will help you. It will be a process rather than a single event and you will have to forgive him/her each time you are tempted with anger and bitterness. Over time love and trust can be restored.
“Forgive one another as quickly and thoroughly as God in Christ forgave you.”
— Ephesians 4:32 (MSG)
Lord, help us forgive those who have sinned against us. Amen.
