The ultimate purpose of friendship is not accountability but nurture. True friends hold each other accountable, to be sure. Yet if that becomes the primary function of the relationship, the friendship will not long survive. The bread that nourishes friendship is acceptance not accountability. True friends strengthen each other in the Lord.
“And Saul’s son Jonathan went to David at Horesh and helped him find strength in God…. ‘Don’t be afraid,’ he said. ‘…You will be king over Israel, and I will be second to you.'”
— 1 Samuel 23:16-17 (NIV)
Lord Jesus, teach us to be true friends who accept each other and help each other find strength in God. In Your holy name we pray. Amen.
