What a contrast: the aged apostle, battle-scarred and bent, living out his days as a prisoner of Rome, destined for death at the executioner’s hand, yet he exults in the joy of the Lord. While King Solomon, the most powerful man on earth is disillusioned as his death draws near. Hear him as he laments the futility of his life. “…when I surveyed all that my hands had done and what I had toiled to achieve, everything was meaningless, a chasing after the wind…” (Eccl. 2:11). The difference—King Solomon lived only for himself while the apostle was consumed with his desire to please Christ.

“For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.”

— Philippians 1:21 (NIV)

Lord Jesus, may loving You and serving You be the consuming passion of our lives. In Your holy name we pray. Amen.
