As a man, Jesus became exhausted by the demands of ministry and fell into such a deep sleep that not even a life-threatening storm could wake Him. Yet, as the Son of God, He commanded the wind and waves to cease, and they obeyed Him (Mark 4:35-41). After forty days of fasting He was literally starving, still He refused to turn stones into bread to feed himself, but on another occasion, He multiplied a boy’s small lunch of five loaves and two fish to feed five thousand (see Matthew 14:15). Although He was omnipotent, He refused to exercise His divine power on His own behalf. He only used it for the benefit of others.
“Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: Who made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant.”
— Philippians 2:5 and 7 (NIV 1984)
Jesus, help us to think of others before we think of ourselves. Amen.
