Frederick Speakman tells of being grieved by a sermon title he saw posted on a church sign. “Refusal makes the man. Have you learned to say no?” Of course, Speakman was wise enough to know that there is an element of truth there. He was mature enough to concur with William James, the Harvard philosopher, who said that every man needs a little “no” in his character to make him strong. But that’s not the gospel. Faith begins with a “yes” rather than a “no.” A “yes” to Jesus! A “yes” to forgiveness and a “yes” to life.
“For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was preached among you … was not ‘Yes’ and ‘No,’ but in him it has always been ‘Yes.'”
— 2 Corinthians 1:19 (NIV)
Lord Jesus, I truly believe You are God’s eternal “yes.” Help me to believe it more. Amen.
