Several years ago, I was called to serve a church in crisis. The congregation had suffered an unspeakable tragedy. Their pastor resigned in anger taking more than half the congregation with him. He went down the street and started another church. The congregants felt betrayed, not only by the pastor, but also by people who had been their friends for years. They were angry. How could friends do that? They feared the church wouldn’t survive. Would they be able to pay the mortgage? Would they be able to call another pastor? And they were tempted to hold a grudge!

“Dear friends, never take revenge. Leave that to the righteous anger of God…Don’t let evil conquer you, but conquer evil by doing good.”

— Romans 12:19, 21 (NLT)

Lord, help us release our hurt and anger and forgive those who wronged us. Amen.
