The evil servant in Jesus’ parable (Matthew 18:21-35) makes Bernie Madoff look like a petty thief. Yet we haven’t even touched on his real sin. I don’t mean to belittle the seriousness of embezzling $29,850,000 but it pales in comparison to what he does next. “He went to a fellow servant who owed him a few thousand dollars. He grabbed him by the throat and demanded instant payment” (Matthew 18:17). The king graciously forgave that evil servant the millions he owed him. What he would not forgive was his refusal to forgive his fellow servant.
“Then the angry king sent the man to prison to be tortured until he had paid his entire debt. That’s what my heavenly Father will do to you if you refuse to forgive your brothers and sisters from your heart.”
— Matthew 18:34-35 (NLT)
Lord give us a forgiving heart. Amen.
