How often we hear the name of the Lord used as a curse or misused by “spiritual” people who are forever saying, “The Lord told me…” when the Lord hasn’t spoken to them at all. Maybe before we pray for the hallowing of His name we should ask forgiveness for misusing His name. The third commandment says, “Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain” (Exodus 20:7). The Message translation puts it this way:
“No using the name of God, your God, in curses or silly banter; God won’t put up with the irreverent use of his name.”
— Exodus 20:7 (MSG)
Father God forgive us for misusing Your name. Hallow Your name on our lips and in our lives. Amen.
