One of my favorite Bible characters is Joseph. When he was 17 years old his brothers sold him into slavery. For the next 13 years he suffered unspeakably. He was falsely accused of attempted rape and cast into prison. Yet three times in Genesis 39 it says, “The Lord was with Joseph…” He was with him when he was sold into slavery, when he was falsely accused, and when he was sent to prison. From Joseph we learn that the Lord is with us no matter how desperate our situation.

“But while Joseph was there in the prison, the Lord was with him; he showed him kindness and granted him favor in the eyes of the prison warden.”

— Genesis 39:20-21 (NIV 1984)

Lord Jesus, be with us in whatever circumstances we find ourselves and grant us favor. In Your holy name we pray. Amen.
