Some years ago, I worked with a recovering alcoholic. According to his way of thinking all his problems revolved around what he called the almighty “I.” He blamed it for all his problems, especially his drinking. He said, “If I ever let the almighty I get the upper hand then I’m in big trouble because it is the almighty I who gets drunk!” Listening to him I realized that it’s not only alcoholics who have “I” problems. We all do. No one is immune, not even the most committed Christian. Like the apostle Paul we find ourselves crying,

“Who will free me from my slavery to [the almighty “I” that is] this deadly lower nature?”

— Romans 7:24 (LB)

Lord Jesus, deliver us from the almighty I. Amen.
