How, you may be wondering, can a person distinguish between genuine guilt, which is the convicting work of the Holy Spirit, and false guilt, which is the condemning slur of the enemy? The key is found in 2 Corinthians 7. “Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death.” Genuine guilt comes from the Holy Spirit and it motivates us to confess our sins and renew our commitment. False guilt tempts us to despair, to give up.

See what this godly sorrow has produced in you: what earnestness, what eagerness to clear yourselves, what indignation, what alarm, what longing, what concern, what readiness to see justice done.

— 2 Corinthians 7:11 (NIV)

Lord Jesus, may the Holy Spirit do His purifying work in us rooting out all sin. In Your holy name we pray. Amen.
