Following the crucifixion of Jesus His followers were completely disillusioned. When he died, their hopes and dreams died. Even after Peter and John visited the empty tomb and Mary Magdalene claimed to have spoken with the risen Lord, they continued to cower behind locked doors in hopelessness and fear. “The God of our ancestors raised Jesus from the dead. . . . We are witnesses of these things.”
— Acts 5:30–32 (NIV)
