The final punishment for sin is separation from God, and that is what Jesus suffered during the darkness which enveloped the cross from the sixth hour until the nineth hour. Mark says He cried out in a loud voice—“Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani” (Mark 15:34). That is, “My God, my God, why have You forsaken Me?” Father God was now dealing with Him as a righteous judge with an evildoer. In that moment God regarded Jesus as the greatest sinner beneath the sun and discharged on Him the whole weight of His wrath.

“It was the Lord’s will to crush him and cause him to suffer…to make his life a guilt offering.”

— Isaiah 53:10 (NIV 1984)

Lord Jesus, thank You for suffering the judgment that was rightfully mine, making it possible for me to be reconciled to God. Amen.
