Jesus suffered verbal abuse and physical violence at the hands of the religious leaders. The High Priest and the Sanhedrin charged Him with blasphemy and condemned Him to death. They incited the Jewish mob to scream for His blood, demanding that Pilate crucify Him. Pilate ordered Him scourged, and He was beaten nearly to death. Then the Romans crucified him. On the cross He suffered hours of unspeakable pain, cycles of twisting, joint-rending cramps, intermittent partial asphyxiation, then a deep, crushing pain deep in His chest as the pericardium filled with serum and began to compress His heart. All this the Bible records with the simple words, “And they crucified him” (Mark 15:24).
“Christ suffered for our sins once for all time.”
