“Self-knowledge,” according to John Gardener, “is ruled out for most people by the increasingly effective self-deception they practice as they grow older.” By middle age, most of us have learned to edit the truth about ourselves until it is more to our liking. The “facts” may remain the same but the conclusions are totally different. We have mastered the art of self-deception and the lie we tell ourselves becomes the “truth” we tell others.

“The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure.
Who can understand it?”

— Jeremiah 17:9

Lord Jesus, don’t let us get away with protesting our innocence or other self-justifying logic. Confront us with truth in the depth of our soul that we may be freed from self-deception. In Your holy name I pray. Amen.
