When Jonathan gave David his weapons—his sword, his bow, and his belt—he made himself vulnerable. He was at David’s mercy. He had no way to defend himself. So it is in a true friendship. When we share our deepest self with our friend, we are giving him the weapons he can use to destroy us. It is the ultimate act of trust, and it is what distinguishes the truly great friendships from those that are just average.

“Jonathan was deeply impressed with David—an immediate bond was forged between them…From that point on he would be David’s number-one advocate and friend.”

— 1 Samuel 18:1 (MSG)

Lord Jesus, keep my heart pure. May I never betray a friend. In Your holy name I pray. Amen.
