The Bible says David and Jonathan became “one in spirit” (1 Samuel 18:1). That oneness of spirit might well be called chemistry and it plays a vital role in all great friendships. Yet, as important as it is, chemistry alone cannot sustain a friendship. It may be the spark that ignites it but only commitment can sustain it. Sooner or later your friendship will be tested. Without a strong commitment it will fail. Commitment enabled David and Jonathan’s friendship to survive the jealousy of Jonathan’s father Saul, and his determined attempts to take David’s life.
“A friend is always loyal,
— Proverbs 17:17 (NLT)
and a brother is born to help in time of need.”
Lord Jesus, give me the strength and character to stand by my friend when adversity strikes, when he needs me most. In Your holy name I pray. Amen.
