In the film, “Amadeus,” we hear Salieri pray: “Lord, make me a great composer. Let me celebrate Your glory through music…Make me famous through the world, dear God, make me immortal…In return I will give You my chastity, my industry, my deep humility, my life.”

Salieri’s prayer may sound noble at first blush but upon closer examination it is blatantly self-serving. The desire to do more than the Lord has called you to do is rooted in pride and a desire to be recognized. Resist it with all your strength lest it destroy you.

“…You said in your heart, ‘I will make myself like the Most High.’ But you are brought down to the grave, to the depths of the pit.”

— Isaiah 14:12-15 (NIV 1984)

Lord Jesus, help me to be willing to serve in obscurity. In Your holy name I pray. Amen.
