If ever there was a man who deserved the judgments of God, it was conniving Jacob. Yet when he seems about to reap the consequences of his lifelong deceitfulness God chooses to manifest His goodness. Now comes the most wonderful part of this ancient story—Jacob is changed! He is not simply forgiven, but transformed. God says that he is no longer Jacob, but Israel; no longer a self-serving con man but a prince with God.

Lord Jesus, cripple us if You must. Do whatever You have to do to deliver us from our sinful self. Teach us to depend only on You. In Your holy name I pray. Amen.
