David’s adulterous affair with Bathsheba is a painful study in how a godly man can succumb to temptation (2 Samuel 11:1-27). There are probably a number of factors that made David susceptible, but I want to focus on David’s relationship with his father. When the prophet Samuel paid Jesse a surprise visit, Jesse invited all his sons to participate in the festivities except David. It’s not hard to imagine how that wounded David—a wound that not even Samuel’s anointing could heal. Emotional wounds like that make all of us vulnerable to sexual temptation. If we are not careful, we will try to meet legitimate emotional needs in inappropriate or even sinful ways. That may be what happened to David.
“Create in me a clean heart, O God,
and renew a right spirit within me.
Cast me not away from your presence,
and take not your Holy Spirit from me.”— Psalm 51:10-11 (ESV)
Lord Jesus, heal the wounds we have suffered and renew a right spirit within us. In Your holy name I pray. Amen.
