Given David’s giftedness—he was a musician, a poet, a fearless warrior and an inspiring leader—it is hard to imagine that he was not ambitious, but he wasn’t. He never aspired to be king and that may be the very reason the Lord chose him. He had several opportunities to take matters into his own hands, but he refused to do so (see 1 Samuel 24:1-7 and 1 Samuel 26:1-11). As far as he was concerned, his life and destiny were in the Lord’s hands.
What about you? Are you trusting the Lord to direct your steps or are you taking matters into your own hands?
“‘No!’ David said. ‘Don’t kill him. For who can remain innocent after attacking the LORD’s anointed one? Surely the LORD will strike Saul down someday, or he will die of old age or in battle. The LORD forbid that I should kill the one he has anointed!’”
— 1 Samuel 26:9-11 (NLT)
Lord Jesus, root out all personal ambition from my life. Help me to trust You and You only with my future. Fulfill Your purposes in my life not my ambitions. In Your holy name I pray. Amen.
