Not long ago I read a story (author unknown) about two horses. Although one horse was blind his owner had chosen not to put him down. The second horse wore a bridle and fastened to it was a small bell. She was the guide horse. Trusting her completely the blind horse followed the sound of the bell on her bridle.

Sooner or later, we are all blinded, at least temporarily, by some unforeseen difficulty or personal tragedy. Thankfully, the Lord does not abandon us. Instead, He sends a friend, or friends, to guide us until we recover our sight. Through their presence, their encouraging words, and faithful prayers we are restored. At other times we are the guides for a friend who has stumbled or fallen.

“Stoop down and reach out to those who are oppressed. Share their burdens, and so complete Christ’s law.”

— Galatians 6:1-2 (MSG)

Lord Jesus, you know how often I have been temporarily blinded. Thank You for the friends You have sent to help me find my way. Amen.
