Elisha had no plans to become a prophet until he encountered Elijah. Following that encounter he gave up everything to answer the Spirit’s call. He left his father and mother. He killed his oxen and burned his plow lest he be tempted to turn back. He may not have realized what he was getting into but Elijah did and that’s why he said, “Go back. What have I done to you” (1 Kings 19:20)? But for Elisha there was no going back.

What about you? Are you willing to burn your bridges to respond to the Spirit’s call?

“…‘No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.’”

— Luke 9:62 (NIV)

Lord Jesus, help us to realize that following You is an all or nothing proposition. In Your holy name I pray. Amen.
