Is your brook drying up? Have the ravens stopped delivering? Of course, I’m speaking metaphorically of those times when God’s promised provision fails to materialize. My remarks are based on the story of Elijah the prophet. When his life was threatened God told him to “…hide in the Kerith Ravine…You will drink from the brook, and I have ordered the ravens to feed you there” (1 Kings 17:3-4). Elijah obeyed and things went well for a time.
Then the brook dried up!
So what happened? Did God’s promises fail? Is the bone-dry brook God’s punishment? No! A thousand times no! There was a widow that the Lord wanted to feed and He could only do so if she obeyed Elijah.
“Then the word of the LORD came to him: ‘Go at once to Zarephath…I have directed a widow there to supply you with food.’”
— 1 Kings 17:8-10 (NIV)
Lord Jesus, help us to hear and obey. In Your holy name we pray. Amen.
