By being obedient in the little things Jesus was able to be obedient in all things. There were many points at which a single act of disobedience could have derailed redemption’s plan, but no experience was more critical than that which Jesus underwent in Gethsemane. In Gethsemane His human will drew back in revulsion from the plan of God. It was not the Roman cross He feared, nor the shame of being crucified with criminals, but separation from His heavenly Father. It was the price He had to pay to redeem Adam’s lost race, but His soul recoiled in horror at the thought. Only a lifetime of obedience enabled Him to pray “Not my will but yours be done” (Luke 22:42 NIV 1984).
“…who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame.”
— Hebrews 12:2 (NKJV)
Jesus, help us to be obedient in the little things so we can be obedient in all things. Amen.
