The first congregation I served was small and it was my job to clean the church, take care of the yard, and shovel the walks in winter. I was also expected to preach three times a week, teach a Sunday school class, lead the singing, visit the sick, and bury the dead. In the course of my pastoral duties, I spent several afternoons with a wonderful old woman who was dying of stomach cancer. From her I learned the ministry of presence—the power of just being there—and the holy art of living until we die.
“But God, who comforts the downcast, comforted us by the coming of Titus…”
— 2 Corinthians 7:6 (NIV 1984)
Lord Jesus, help us to serve in all ways great or small. In Your holy name I pray. Amen.
