The first congregation I served consisted of down-to-earth people—farmers and ranchers for the most part who had weathered drought and dust storms, tornadoes and hail, blizzards and tough times. They weren’t impressed by big words and theological concepts. Their Christianity was of a more practical kind. Early on I realized that my effectiveness did not depend on the quality of the sermons I preached, but in the way I lived and how I loved. I call that “Blue Collar Christianity.”

“Pure and genuine religion in the sight of God the Father means caring for orphans and widows in their distress and refusing to let the world corrupt you.”

— James 1:27 (NLT)

Lord Jesus, help us to love the unlovable and to serve those in need whoever they are. In Your holy name I pray. Amen.
