Am I the only one who is tempted to judge those who stand on the street corner with signs asking for a handout? My critical heart can find a dozen excuses to look the other way—maybe they’re just too lazy to work. Maybe they will use whatever money I give them to buy alcohol or drugs. Maybe they’re just clever con men. Gently the Lord reminds me that what they do with the money I give them is no concern of mine. “But,” I protest, “I want to be a good steward.” His voice again, nearer, and more insistent:

“I tell you the truth, whatever you [do] for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you [do] for me.”

— Matthew 25:40 (NIV 1984)

Lord, forgive us for being judgmental. Give us compassionate hearts. Amen.
