As a young man I suffered from what I called the Frank Sinatra syndrome—”I did it my way.” I was committed to serving God, but I wanted to do it my way. I was committed to the ministry, but I wanted to do it my way. Whatever it was I wanted to do it my way. William Temple writes, “There is only one sin, and it is characteristic of the whole world. It is the self-will which prefers ‘my’ way to God’s—which puts ‘me’ in the center where only God is in place.” What about you? Are you suffering from the “Frank Sinatra syndrome?”

“Oh, what a terrible predicament I’m in! Who will free me from my slavery to this deadly lower nature?”

— Romans 7:24 (TLB)

Lord, may Your will be done in me as it is done in heaven. Amen.
