It is not easy to take responsibility for the part we have played in wounding a friendship, but it is absolutely mandatory. As long as we only see ourselves as victims there is little chance of restoring the relationship. Acknowledging the hurts we have caused is painful, but when we allow that pain to call us prayer—to the honest soul-searching such prayer demands—we move into a position of humility and vulnerability, into a position where God can do His holy work in us. Then, and only then, can the friendship be restored.

“Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye?’”

— Matthew 7:3 (NIV)

Lord, do Your holy work in me so I can be reconciled with my friend. Amen.
