Due to my father’s example, I entered the ministry with a commitment to practical Christianity. What I call “blue collar” Christianity—love with its sleeves rolled up. The first congregation I served was located in Holly, Colorado—population 900. For the most part my congregation consisted of down-to-earth people—farmers and ranchers who had weathered drought and dust, tornadoes and hail, blizzards and tough times—and they weren’t overly impressed by big words or theological concepts. Their Christianity was of a more practical kind, and almost immediately I realized that my effectiveness lay not so much in the sermons I preached, but in the way I lived and how I loved.
“We worked hard day and night so we would not be a burden to any of you.”
— 2 Thessalonians 3:8 (NLT)
Lord help us to be a good example to our children. Amen.
