In Old Testament times, Sabbath-breakers were executed. Exodus 35:2 says, “Whoever does any work on it [the Sabbath] must be put to death.” Those who break the Sabbath today suffer similar consequences – not at the hands of a religious or judicial system but as the inevitable consequence of their transgression. When you violate the Sabbath principle of rest, your soul suffers, as do your relationships, your creative energies and, ultimately, your physical health.

“There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God.
Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest.”

— Hebrew 4:9, 11

Lord Jesus, forgive us for working far too much in an attempt to prove our worth. Help us to trust Your grace and enter into the rest You have provided. In Your holy name I pray. Amen.
