World War II ushered in the first widespread practice of seven-day-a-week, twenty-four-hour-a-day production. By the 1960’s and the 1970’s, retailers were following suit, and the Sabbath principle was a thing of the past. Not coincidentally, there was a significant increase in emotional dysfunction, juvenile delinquency and divorce. Without the rhythm of rest provided by the Sabbath, life was unraveling at the seams.
“Six days you shall labor, but on the seventh day you shall rest;
— Exodus 34:21
even during the plowing season and harvest you must rest.”
Lord Jesus, help us to give rest the same priority we give work. In Your holy name I pray. Amen.
