A tormented Vietnam vet deliberately crashed his sports car into the concrete embankment at the entrance to the Eisenhower Tunnel in Colorado. The Highway Patrol estimated that he was driving in excess of 100 miles per hour when the crash occurred. His closest friends described him as a tormented man, haunted by the memories of his time in Vietnam. Neither counseling nor antidepressants helped. They were simply no match for his memories, or the guilt to which they gave birth. Finally he could bear it no more. In desperation he chose to end his life rather than continue to live in torment.
“Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death.”
–2 Corinthians 7:10(NIV)
Father God, hear our confession and forgive our sins. Deliver us from the guilt that is poisoning our soul. In the name of Jesus Christ I pray. Amen.
