You may be wondering how you can distinguish between true and false guilt. True guilt comes from the Holy Spirit. It makes us painfully aware of our sinful failures, but even as it does, it motivates us to confess our sins and try again. False guilt, on the other hand, tempts us to despair. It tells us that we will never be any different, that God is sick of our repeated failures and ready to wash His hands of us. It tempts us to give up, it drives us into hiding, away from God. Allow the conviction of the Holy Spirit to move you to repentance but resist accusation of the enemy with all your might.

“Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”

— James 4:7 (NLT)

Holy Spirit, sanctify us and deliver us from evil. Amen.
