There must have been days when Joseph was tempted with self-pity but if he was the scriptures don’t say anything about it. According to Genesis 39:22 the warden made him responsible for all the other prisoners. By focusing on their needs instead of his own he was able to escape the snare of self-pity. If you’re tempted to feel sorry for yourself, look around and find somebody you can lend a helping hand. It worked for Joseph and it will work for you.

“We who are strong ought to bear with the failings of the weak and not to please ourselves. Each of us should please his neighbor…”

— Romans 15:1-2 (NIV 1984)

Lord Jesus, help us to encourage ourselves by lending our neighbor a helping hand. In Your holy name we pray. Amen.
