If you were a Christ follower in the first century you were risking your life. History tells us that eleven of the twelve apostles were martyred. James was beheaded. Peter was crucified upside down. Mark died after being dragged through the streets by horses. Luke was hung. Thomas was stabbed with a spear. Matthew was impaled by a sword and Paul was beheaded. Although we may never be required to lay down our physical life for Christ, we will be required to lay down our way of life. Daily we will have to choose between the way of the world and the will of God, between our self-interests and the cause of Christ.
“Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.”
— Luke 9:23 (NIV)
Lord, help us to lay down our way of life for the cause of Christ. Amen.
