When we are born again Jesus assumes His rightful place on the throne of our life. From His position of authority, He empowers us to “discipline” the almighty “I”. Life itself provides daily opportunities to practice the kind of self-denial that puts the almighty “I” in his place. Arriving at the check-out line the same time as another customer affords us an opportunity to step back and let him go first. Being cut off by a driver in rush hour traffic we can get angry, or we can repay evil with good. Each time we exercise Spirit directed self-control we drive a stake in the heart of our arch enemy–the almighty “I”.
“Don’t let evil get the best of you; get the best of evil by doing good.”
— Romans 12:21 (MSG)
Jesus, help us to practice the kind of self-denial that puts the almighty “I” in his place. Amen.
