As difficult as our situation is things were worse when Jesus was born. Life was brutal—poverty was widespread, disease rampant, the exposure of infants an accepted fact of life, women were considered the property of their husbands and Judea was an occupied country. The Jews had their own puppet king, but he was just a figurehead. Rome was calling the shots, collecting the taxes, and executing anyone who dared oppose them. Then something happened that changed everything, not instantly, but eternally.

“The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned.”

— Isaiah 9:2 (NIV)

Father God let that light dawn on us afresh for we are living in dark times. In Your holy name we pray. Amen.
