Prayer was the single most important discipline of Jesus’ earthly existence and the source of His strength. The whole of His life was permeated with prayer. He prayed publicly and in private. While others slept, He arose in the pre-dawn darkness to seek the Father’s face (see Mark 1:35). Long after most people had retired for the night, He could be found on His knees praying. Often He slipped away into the mountains to pray (see Mark 6:47), and if not into the mountains then to Gethsemane as was His custom (see Luke 22:39). Well did He say, “Men ought always to pray, and not to faint” (Luke 18:1).

“Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.”

— Matthew 26:41 (NIV 1984)

Lord Jesus, teach us to pray lest we fall into temptation. In Your holy name we pray. Amen.
