I don’t know about you but when I’m comfortable and well fed, I want to stay put. Maybe Elijah was like that too. Maybe that’s why God allowed the brook to dry up (1 Kings 17:7). Maybe that was the only way Elijah would have been willing to go to a widow in Zarephath (1 Kings 17:9), considering it was a 100-mile hike through a blistering wasteland. God sent Elijah to Zarephath not to provide for him, but to sustain the starving widow and her son for the duration of the drought.

“Don’t be afraid…For this is what the LORD… says: ‘the jar of flour will not be used up and the jug of oil will not run dry…’ So she went away and did as Elijah had told her.”

— 1 Kings 17:13-15 (NIV 1984)

Lord Jesus, give us the faith to obey even when it feels like stepping off a cliff in the dark. In Your holy name we pray. Amen.
