When the Lord sent Elijah to a widow in s he probably imagined a wealthy widow with abundant resources. But the Lord’s ways are not our ways and the first person he saw was a poor widow gathering sticks—what we might call a bag lady. When he asked her for a drink of water and a piece of bread she broke down weeping. “…I don’t have any bread….” (1 Kings 17:12). Little did she know that she was about to receive a lesson in the economy of the Kingdom. A lesson it behooves us all to learn. What we keep never grows but what we give away never runs out!
“‘Don’t be afraid…For this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says…’”
— 1 Kings 17:13 (NIV 1984)
Lord Jesus, help me to be obedient when You ask me to give all that I have especially if I don’t know where my next paycheck is coming from. In Your holy name I pray. Amen.
