Silence is not an enemy to be avoided, but a friend to be embraced. It is the language of the soul, the language of intimacy. God often speaks to us through silence. In silence He teaches us the deep mysteries of the Spirit, the things that can never be communicated with mere words.

“And after the fire came a gentle whisper. When Elijah heard it,
he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave.”

— 1 Kings 19:12-13

Lord Jesus, silence is foreign to us, noise being such an integral part of our world. Teach us to turn off our iPods and cell phones and embrace the silence that we may truly hear Your voice. In Your holy name we pray. Amen.
