Is guilt always a bad thing? No. It is always painful, but it is not always destructive. True guilt is redemptive. It causes us to grieve unspeakably, but it does not abandon us to die in the dark night of our sin. It is designed to bring us to our knees in genuine repentance; to produce heartfelt confession that leads to forgiveness. False guilt, on the other hand, is toxic. It destroys our soul, sucks the very life out of us.
“Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death.”
— 2 Corinthians 7:10 (NIV 1984)
Lord Jesus, give us the wisdom to discern between the conviction of the Holy Spirit and the condemnation of the enemy. In Your holy name we pray. Amen.
