I can’t help asking myself what Jesus was thinking when he asked Peter, James, and John to stay with Him as His world was falling apart. What could they do? They couldn’t drink that dreadful cup for Him, nor could their prayers, no matter how desperate or faith-filled, alter Father God’s eternal plan. So, what was the point?

I can’t fault that logic, but it misses the point. While a friend may not be able to “put our world back together” their presence can give us the strength to do what we could never do alone, and their prayers can sustain us as nothing else can.

“But God, who encourages those who are discouraged, encouraged us by the arrival of Titus.”

— 2 Corinthians 7:6 (NLT)

Lord help us to be there for those whose world is falling apart. Amen.
